HERE Lidar Data is a service that provides on-demand access to an archive of off-the-shelf terrestrial lidar data from which customers can select their required coverage, via a simple online portal. The data is georeferenced and colored using HERE’s panoramic imagery to provide additional context, and delivered in the .las or .laz data formats. This extensive library of 3D lidar point clouds is unique in the industry in coverage and accuracy. Unlike data from private surveying contractors, Lidar Data is global in scale, offered at a fraction of the cost and is delivered in days vs weeks or months.

This guide provides an overview of lidar and easy-to-use instructions for first time users to download lidar data via the HERE Lidar Data service.

Lidar stands for "laser imaging, detection, and ranging." HERE vehicles collect lidar data as they drive along roads. This collection process works by starting from a known location, such as a vehicle using GPS to track its position. Special lasers mounted on the vehicle fire in carefully calibrated directions. A receiver on the vehicle measures the time for the laser light that's reflected off nearby objects to be returned, which allows the distance between the vehicle and surrounding objects to be determined. The result consists of 3D point clouds that are georeferenced and colored to provide additional context, and available to customers in the .las or .laz data formats.

The following figures show how lidar compares to reality. (The HERE Street Level Imagery product from which these figures are derived is not part of the HERE Lidar Data product offering. These images are used here as conceptual examples.)

HERE uses lidar to identify and geolocate road furniture (e.g., barriers, poles, etc.) and localization objects (e.g., road signs), as well as to automatically model 3D building facades, so our maps more closely resemble real places and support many use cases - including navigation, infrastructure planning, and public safety.

Overview: Ordering and using lidar data

HERE Lidar Data is a service that offers a neutral, secure, and scalable environment designed to facilitate interaction and lidar data exchange between the consumer and HERE.

To order lidar data, you will interact primarily with the HERE Lidar Data portal to select the desired data. After purchasing lidar data in the HERE Marketplace, you can then access and download your data from either the Marketplace or AWS S3 Platform (if you provide your credentials).
